By the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, dated February 10, 2017, the Azerbaijan Food Safety Agency (AFSA) was established. The Charter of the Agency was approved by the Presidential Decree of November 13, 2017, “On ensuring the operation of the Azerbaijan Food Safety Agency.”

According to the Presidential Orders dated January 26, 2018, and May 22, 2018, laboratories, equipment, administrative buildings, and staff units operating under the balance of relevant state bodies were transferred to the Agency. As a result, a new centralized management system was created by applying a unified approach in the field of food safety. A network consisting of 16 laboratories equipped with the most modern devices and capable of conducting the most complex analyses was established in Baku and the regions.

The Agency’s goal is to ensure the population’s access to healthy and safe food, thereby significantly reducing foodborne diseases, as well as to increase the productivity and competitiveness of agricultural and food products and to expand exports to the markets of developed countries.
